Our Story

How a beaten-down athlete found his way back through iron and grit

THE BEGINNING

Look, I'm not gonna feed you some polished origin story. Back in 2018, I was pretty much done with the whole fitness scene. Burned out from competitive Olympic lifting, dealing with injuries that wouldn't quit, and honestly questioning why I'd spent half my life chasing numbers on a barbell.

Took about six months off. Didn't touch a weight. Just walked around Vancouver, drank too much coffee, and tried figuring out what the hell I was doing with my life. Then one day at this run-down gym on Granville, I saw this older guy – must've been pushing 60 – grinding through deadlifts with form that'd make most coaches cry. But the determination on his face? That's what got me.

We got talking. Turned out he'd just beaten cancer and was rebuilding himself from scratch. Said something that stuck: "Strength isn't about the weight you move – it's about showing up when everything in you says quit." Man, that hit different.

Started working with him, then a few of his friends. No fancy programming, just real people wanting to feel strong again. That's when it clicked – I didn't wanna train elite athletes anymore. I wanted to help regular folks tap into that warrior mindset, that refusal to back down when life throws punches.

Opened Arcen Valor Forge in late 2019 with pretty much my life savings and a beat-up squat rack. The name? "Arcen" was my grandmother's maiden name – she survived way worse than a tough workout. And "Valor Forge"... well, if you know your history, you know that's where Washington's army got forged through hell into something unbreakable. Felt right.

What We're Really About

Forget the Instagram highlight reels and transformation promises. Here's the actual deal.

Real Over Perfect

You're gonna have off days. Form might break down. That's life. We focus on showing up consistently, not being perfect every session. Progress isn't linear and anyone telling you different is selling something.

Community, Not Cliques

We've got everyone from teachers to tech workers to retired folks. Nobody cares if you're lifting 95lbs or 315lbs. What matters is you're putting in the work. The person next to you gets that because they're doing the same thing.

Strength Beyond the Bar

Yeah, we lift heavy. But I've seen more life transformations happen from the mental toughness you build than the actual weight moved. Learning to push when you wanna quit? That transfers everywhere.

No Gimmicks Zone

Barbells, dumbbells, your bodyweight, and hard work. That's it. We're not chasing fitness trends or the next viral workout. This stuff worked 50 years ago and it'll work 50 years from now.

How We Got Here

Six years of grinding, growing, and figuring it out as we went

November 2019

Opened the Doors

Started with 8 members in a 1,200 sq ft space. Had two squat racks, some bumper plates, and a whole lot of hope. First month we made like $600. Almost quit three times.

March 2020

Pandemic Hit

Yeah, that timing. Shut down for four months. Ran free outdoor sessions in parks to keep everyone moving. Lost some members but the ones who stuck around? They became family. That adversity showed us what we were really made of.

January 2022

Expanded the Space

Finally scraped together enough to lease the unit next door. Knocked down the wall ourselves over a weekend. Now sitting at 3,200 sq ft with 85 members. Added more Olympic platforms and started the warrior boot camps that people seem to love.

June 2023

Brought on Sarah

Hired our first full-time coach. Sarah's background in functional movement and rehab filled gaps I didn't even know we had. Finally wasn't doing everything solo. Game changer for our members dealing with old injuries.

November 2025

Right Now

Running at 140 members with a waitlist. We've got three coaches now, a tight-knit community, and honestly? Still feels surreal. Every day someone tells me this place changed their life. That's why we do it.
